Medicaid Health Insurance

Access to health care is a critically important issue – particularly for people with disabilities. Medicaid is one of the primary programs that provides health insurance for people with disabilities.

Medicaid (Also known as Medical Assistance)

 • The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) provides Medicaid health care coverage to Marylanders with very low income and resources (or in some cases middle income families), and who meet other eligibility requirements.

• Some people are automatically eligible for Medicaid health care coverage – for example, people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and people who receive services through the home and community based waiver program through the Developmental Disabilities Administration. The Medicaid program has other programs that provide health care coverage, including the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP and MCHP Premium), the Primary Adult Care Program (PAC), the Employed Individuals with Disabilities Program (EID). For information about these and other programs available through the Maryland Medical Assistance Program: see their website at www.dhmh.state.md.us/mma/mmahome.html.

• Medical Assistance applications are not available on line. You can obtain an application by contacting either your local health department (www.cha.state.md.us/html/local.html), your local Department of Social Services (DSS) www.dhr.state.md.us/county.htm or your Service Coordinator (www.servicecoordinationinc.org/contactus/).
