Employment Development

Preparing For and Obtaining Work

The Maryland State Department of Education Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS)  helps people with disabilities prepare for and obtain work.

DORS offers Vocational Rehabilitation Services, including career assessment, vocational training and job placement, for people whose disability affects their ability to work. DORS has offices statewide. You can find your local DORS office at: www.dors.state.md.us/DORS/AboutDORS/DORSLocations/default or you can call (301) 777-2119.

“For Students and Their Families: Design Your Future”

Overview of the services provided by the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) for transitioning students, including: What is DORS, Programs and Services, Eligibility, and the Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).

Office for Blindness and Vision Services

Services for people who have vision loss as their primary disability.

Workforce and Technology Center (WTC)

Located in North East Baltimore, the Workforce and Technology Center offers on-site services and training, including career assessment, job placement, pre-vocational services, services for people who are blind or visually impaired, assistive technology, support services, medical services and more to help people become employed or live independently. People are usually referred to WTC by their DORS Counselor. Tours of the Center are available. Toll free: 888-200-7117.

“Opening Doors to Employment”

This brochure outlines the four steps involved in accessing DORS services: including applying, meeting with a DORS counselor, developing an employment plan, and follow-up once you are working.

“The MAST: Mastering a Successful Transition Program”

MAST offers a summer program for high school students with learning disabilities who plan to attend college.

Community Living Skills Training Program (CLST)
Serves people with disabilities over 16 who have difficulty in their home or community environments.

Self-Employment

“Reach Independence Through Self-Employment” Program (RISE).

For people interested in self-employment, DORS operates Maryland’s “Reach Independence Through Self Employment” (RISE) Program”. RISE provides support so that people with developmental disabilities can start their own small business. Toll free: 888.788.7473.
